This soft drink just passed Pepsi as the second most popular soda brand
Coke is the number one soda in America. But the number two spot, previously held by Pepsi, now belongs to Dr Pepper.
CNN reports that after years of slowly moving up in market share, Dr Pepper inched ahead of Pepsi as the number two soda brand in the country in 2023, according to data from Beverage Digest, a trade publication.
While “Dr Pepper has been gaining, (Pepsi) has been declining, and they’re meeting in the middle,” said Duane Stanford, editor of Beverage Digest, in an interview with CNN.
The data shows Dr Pepper and Pepsi both at around 8.3% with Dr Pepper claiming a slight margin. In comparison, Coke captures 19.2% of the U.S. soda market and two of its other brands – Sprite and Diet Coke – round out the top five with 8.1% and 7.8% respectively.
Dr Pepper has been one of the companies to capitalize on the trend of limited edition, new flavors. In May, the company released Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut and Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Zero Sugar– two flavors that will be available nationwide through the end of July. The flavor will be sold in 12-oz 12-packs and also 20-oz bottles.
