PROSSER, Wash. – The Prosser farmers market returns on June 1 with vendors of all ages.
Sophie Durbin is a fourth grader living in Prosser. She is also the owner of her own business called “Slimey S.” She said she’s been making and selling slime for two years.
“I got this like big genius idea. I want to make slime and sell it. Because that’s what I want to do to be famous and that’s how I just became so big,” Durbin said.
The market manager Rita Brown said she encourages youth vendors to participate.
“We have a number of youth vendors and I’m just taken by how talented they are. We have vendors where maybe it may be their first time doing something like this. So, it’s really neat to see them grow,” Brown said.
There are also local farmers like Hal Collins who sell their organic produce. Collins and Brown both share how community is so important to them.
“What I’ve found with the folks who show up at the farmers market is they’re all very personable people. They all have an inquiry. They say ‘Hey, how’s it going Hal’,” Collins said.
According to Brown, that sense of community is growing. Last year’s opening day had 23 vendors and this year it will have 34.
“Everybody’s helping everybody. We all want everyone to do well. I’m a big advocate for vendors. I want the vendors to do really well,” Brown said.
Brown added that most of the vendors are from Prosser or the surrounding area. She says some of them have businesses downtown and the market is a good opportunity to get their name out there.
Their motto: the market with a heart.
