Missouri S&T – News and Events – New name for Missouri S&T’s geosciences,

The programs and faculty members are staying the same, but the name of Missouri S&T’s geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering department has now changed. The department’s name was recently rebranded to earth sciences and engineering.

“Earth sciences and engineering reflects a strategic pivot toward a more inclusive and forward-looking representation of the department’s academic and research activities,” says Dr. Stephen Gao, a Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor and chair of the department. “We also see it as a critical step toward attracting a wider pool of students.”

Gao says the department’s previous name directly listed its majors, but it did so in an unnecessarily complicated and restrictive way. He says the name change is the result of a comprehensive evaluation process that incorporated feedback from faculty, students and alumni, and it required several layers of approval.

“The new name accurately encapsulates the breadth of our department’s missions and grants us enhanced flexibility to broaden our research and educational endeavors,” he says.

The department’s research and programs cover several topics that address national and global challenges.

Some of those topics include geospatial science and engineering, mineral and energy resource exploration and extraction, climate change, carbon sequestration, natural hazards mitigation, and natural resource management.

The department’s majors include geology and geophysics, geological engineering, and petroleum engineering, and students can earn bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees.
