Is the Stock Market Open Today? Here Are the Hours for July 3 and 4.


Investors looking to start their Fourth of July festivities a little early this week are in luck.

While Independence Day—a federal holiday that is observed annually on July 4 to commemorate when the U.S. declared itself independent from Great Britain on July 4, 1776— falls on Thursday this year, markets have slightly different hours the day prior.

So far this year, markets have made gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has climbed 4.4%, while the S&P 500 has gained 15.5% and the Nasdaq Composite has soared 20%.

Here’s what to know if you’re looking to trade on July 3.

Is the Stock Market Open on July 3 and on the Fourth of July?

and over-the-counter markets will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The bond market will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All U.S. markets will be shuttered on Thursday in observance of the Fourth of July, before resuming their normal hours on Friday.

Are International Markets Open July 3?

London Stock Exchange

the Euronext Paris, the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange will all be open on Wednesday.

Will It Be a Busy Trading Day?

Over the last five years, the average composite stock market volume for July 3 has been 4,948,200,194, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The average of all other days, meanwhile, is about 10,650,590,085.

In other words, investors can expect about half the usual amount of trading on Wednesday.
