Environmental advocacy groups rally at capitol for action on gas, oil industry

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Exposure to hazardous waste can result in lifelong health problems, environmental advocacy groups said at a rally today at the state capitol.

There, they discussed the lack of protection for employees who work with gas and oil.

Justin Nobel, an author who said he investigated those industries for seven years, says they have avoided environmental regulations, creating a health crisis.

“We are speaking to the power, and that is to the people who have set the rules and regulations for this state’s oil and gas development,” Nobel said. “Their greed and their ignorance has enabled a radiological disaster.”

Samples gathered during his investigation found radium at levels 5,000 times higher than general background levels.
