Coal Mine Ride simulator opens to the public in Fairmont
FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — After four years in development, the Northern Appalachian Coal Mining Heritage Association (NACMHA) has finally completed its reproduction of what it’s like to entire a coal mine.
The “Coal Mine Ride“, owned and operated by NACHMA officially opened on June 1, offering the chilling experience of riding in a minecart underground.

Located at Coal Country’s Miniature Golf course, the simulator sits in front of the golf course and appears to be heading underground within the hillside. Once you walk in and climb into the minecart, you become fully immersed in the adventure.
12 News spoke with NACMHA’s President and retired coal miner Mike Rohaly on why the experience with the simulator is unique.

“There’s no place close by where you can actually go in a coal mine and just look around. It can be done, but it’s very complicated, almost requires a lot of planning coordination. For one thing, it takes an hour of training before you can even set foot underground,” said Rohaly.
The video used in the Coal Mine Ride features vintage footage as well as footage from three local mines including Humphrey Mine near Morgantown, Harrison County Mine (Robinson Run), and Marion County Mine (Loveridge). Robinson Run and Loveridge footage was obtained within the last year.

The ride also offers 16 other non-coal related simulation options such as a hot pursuit, a tour of the human body, bobsledding, a dino race and a rollercoaster.
Currently, the Coal Mine Ride’s hours of operation reflect those of Coal Country Miniature Golf, from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week. Admission for the simulator is $5 per rider, although NACMHA members ride for free.
You can join NACMHA for a $10 annual fee, which will offer discounts on the golf course as well. You can inquire about becoming a member by emailing NACMHA@aol.com.
