Chevrolet Camaro Rolls, Drives Wall on Its Side in Race Against Miata on Track

Racing is hard. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you end up taking a wild sideways ride on a barrier. One Chevy Camaro driver experienced the latter while racing a Mazda Miata on a circle track. Of course, the whole thing was caught on video.

The incident happened last Saturday at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois just southwest of Chicago. Video shows the silver late-model Camaro lined up against a blue first-generation Miata. As the race begins, the Chevrolet takes the lead. In fact, they put about a car length on the little Japanese roadster before it becomes evident that it’s traveling too fast.

The driver runs well wide of the turn and smashes into the wall. In the process, they sort of ride the wall a mountain biker would and the car comes to rest on its driver’s side door.

“The guy in the Camaro didn’t seem to know how to control the car and just went straight into the wall, thankfully he came out unscathed and the car was towed away,” the person behind the Wheels and Weights TikTok account, a crash witness, told Road & Track.

The damage is obviously significant. A tire rolls away as the Camaro is still coming to a stop, the driver’s side is clearly ruined, and there’s damage on the passenger side as well. What started out as a fun little excursion ended up with what will likely be a total loss on the American sports car. Thankfully, everybody walked away safely.

This video is a great testament to the life-saving technology on display here. The wall did a great job of effectively deflecting the car away from spectators and the safety systems in the car itself kept the driver from serious injury or worse. We’re glad the ones who took the video below weren’t in the line of fire though. They appear to be on the inside of the track but on the outer wall where things could’ve gone bad just as fast.
