Chantiers de l’Atlantique, a shipbuilder with more than 150 years of experience in the industry, has collaborated with Brunvoll, a Norwegian engineering firm that will serve as the propulsion supplier of the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships, touted to be the world’s largest sailing ships. The current agreement is for two vessels, with the possibility of adding two more in the future.

Brunvoll is providing the propulsion system for these ships, featuring a twin-screw configuration and controllable pitch propellers that are designed to be fully feathered to limit drag while sailing. Reducing drag during sailing is important because it can for example reduce fuel consumption. This can lead to cost savings and contribute to for example environmental sustainability by lowering emissions.
