$500,000 in funding presented to the Meadowview Farmers’ Market
The South Sacramento neighborhood is a food desert, having a lack of grocery stores in the area, but the new farmers market is set to change that.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A $500,000 check was presented to the city of Sacramento and the Meadowview Community Farmers’ Market to help launch the market.
According to Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen’s office, the funding will help provide affordable and locally sourced fresh produce to an area known as a food desert, having a lack of grocery stores in the area.
“For many families, just making sure you can put food on the table is a lot to worry about. Eating healthy is the last thing on your mind when you are struggling to make ends meet,” said Assemblymember Nguyen. “I am proud to secure seed money that will provide access to fresh produce grown nearby and help families to live healthier lifestyles.”
The first day of the market was Sunday, June 9.
“I’m really excited for the community. This has been a long time coming, but we’re really excited. We hope that the community will come out and support us,” said Sacramento Councilmember Mai Vang in a previous ABC10 interview.
The market is located at the Meadowview Light Rail station along Meadowview Road. It runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. year-round on Sundays. For more information, click here.
